Be ye thankful!

That is the mandate of Scripture to a child of God. It is a command that is found throughout the Word of God and a reminder to us that our Heavenly Father knows every circumstance that comes into our lives. The Psalmist, in his worship of the God of Israel, stated --

… “Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.”
(Ps 100:4 KJV)

A heart of thanksgiving is sensitive to the working of God in one’s life. Though the tendency in life is to think of things that occur to us as being accidental and unexpected, there is much comfort in knowing that our God knew in eternity past all that would enter our lives and made perfect provision for such. That assurance becomes the basis for giving thanks in all things, for the God of the universe is in charge, the Sovereign God over all creation. Nothing occurs without His direct, permissive or overruling will.

… "To whom will you compare me? Or who is my equal?" says the Holy One. Lift your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one, and calls them each by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing. Why do you say, O Jacob, and complain, O Israel, "My way is hidden from the LORD; my cause is disregarded by my God"? Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”
(Isaiah 40:25-31 NIV)

An attitude of thanksgiving should prevail in both times of prosperity and difficulty, knowing that, as Christians, we are His possession. If He can keep the universe, with its unnumbered heavenly bodies, in perfect orbit, can He not be sufficient for our present and future needs? If, indeed, He can number the hairs on our head, can He not supply our every need? Therefore, Paul, in writing to the churches in Colossae, gave us the secret to an unwavering faith regardless of external events.

… “Let the peace of Christ rule [umpire] in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.”
(Colossians 3:15-16 NIV)
