It is often heard in our day comments concerning how wonderful is the technological age in which we live.

That is indeed true for we have at our fingertips resources that once took hours and even days to research and access. The information is there, but one must know how to retrieve it for it to become useful. How greater in significance is the resource of all spiritual knowledge, the Word of God. All that God desires for the human race to know concerning Himself and His actions in human and angelic history are recoded for us in Scripture. There no doubt is more of God to know beyond what Scripture reveals. It will take an eternity to learn all that God wants to reveal of Himself to us and that is the excitement and anticipation of enjoying a forever with Christ. However, what God has revealed in Scripture can be known and should be known. The Apostle Peter closed out his second epistle with this admonition --

… “But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.”
(2 Peter 3:18 KJV)

How is this to be accomplished in our lives? Of course one must first begin with the Cross of Christ. It is the central point in all human history and it is there that we obtain saving grace which places us in relationship with God. Through His Cross, the whole human race is reconciled to God and the offer of salvation offered without cost, as a free gift, to all who will accept it solely on the basis of faith in Christ.

“But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name.”
(John 1:12 NASB)

With salvation assured because of His grace, the challenge is to learn of Him. Jesus in speaking to the skeptical crowds in Capernaum reminded them that their human achievements did not provide relationship with God nor did human solutions resolve and bring peace and security to the problems of life. They needed to trust him, but there was no capacity to trust, for His Word and Works had been rejected by them. In grace the message went out to those people once more --

… “Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls, for my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
(Matt 11:28-30 KJV)

Note several key words in that passage – “come” – that indicates willingness, a desire to obtain rest for the soul. Then we see “take and learn” -- this is the discipline to submit daily to the study of God’s Word and to apply its Truth to ones life. Note finally the result – “rest for your souls.” In a day in which, in spite of our technological advances, there appears trouble on every hand, how promising are the words of our Savior that there can be inner peace and rest in these times. A beautiful hymn by Ruth Caye Jones has these lyrics:

In times like these, you need a Savior,
In times like these, you need an anchor.
Be very sure, be very sure,
Your anchor holds and in the Solid Rock.
This Rock is Jesus; yes He’s the One,
This Rock is Jesus, the only One.
