That event, the Second Coming of Christ is still future, but was spoken of in the same breath which foretold --
… “unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given.”(Isa 9:6)
Isaiah passed God’s test of a true prophet for if what was predicted occurred, then the prophet’s ministry was validated. The yet to be fulfilled portion gives us some magnificent titles for the Lord Jesus Christ. “And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.” F. C. Jennings writes in his Studies on Isaiah on page 116 --“wonderful!” indeed then He is, not only in what He says and does, but in the unfathomable mysteries of His own person.” As Counselor, who can doubt that as the omniscient God, He knows all things and therefore His counsel and wisdom are always right. The Lord Jesus Christ takes counsel from no one for none are His equal. Paul in his letter to the Romans states --
… “who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been His counselor?”(Rom 11:34)
His judgments are perfect, sure, never in need of revision, modification, reversal or regret. The prophet also declares his name as “mighty God.” This in the Hebrew is El Gibbor -- the God to whom all power is given, in whom all might exists and in whom all things consist. He is the omnipotent God, the Creator, who holds the universe together and, at the same time, as the child born, lies in a manger --
… “all things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.”(John 1:3)
This Jesus is also named the everlasting Father, or Father of eternity. He is the possessor of eternity and is the ever faithful, guardian and provider for His people not only in time but in eternity. The Apostle John writes --
… “And the witness is this, that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life.”(1 John 5:11-12)
The final name given to our Lord in Isaiah’s prophecy is that of “prince of peace,” in the Hebrew, “Shar-Shalohim.” All peace is centered in Jesus Christ, whether individual or that of a nation. This is a prince who removes all peace-disturbing powers and secures peace among the nations. Micah, the same Jewish prophet who stated that the Savior would be born in Bethlehem seven hundred years before it occurred, was given the privilege of seeing the end of the story in which this Jesus reigns and rules as Kings of Kings and Lord of Lords. He wrote of a future time in which there would be peace on earth.
“And He will judge between many peoples and render decisions for mighty, distant nations. Then they will hammer their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks; nation will not lift up sword against nation, and never again will they train for war.”(Micah 4:3)
God’s Word given through His prophets true and accurate; history attests to that. All creation waits with anticipation that which Isaiah spoke.
“There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness from then on and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will accomplish this.”(Isa 9:7)
