Thousands upon thousands have made the supreme sacrifice to uphold the principles of liberty and preserve the blessings God has granted us. We in turn, are faced with the reality that this legacy can be maintained and revered, or it can be held in disdain and destroyed. In the spiritual realm, a legacy founded upon God’s Word can become a tremendous blessing for future generations. Moses gave evidence of this as his leadership and devotion to the Lord surfaced in the lives of Joshua and Caleb. These individuals were willing to go counter to the popular thinking of their day and instead believe that which God had promised. It is no small coincidence that we see Godly minded parents naming their children for Biblical characters who made an impact in their generation. It is doubtful that such persons of great character and action had in the forefront of their thinking that of making an impression on others. They were ordinary people willing to be used by God. Some impacted the lives of thousands, others perhaps lesser numbers; some perhaps only their family. Who would think of the impact and legacy of a mother and a grandmother having lasting spiritual benefit? Yet that is exactly what occurred in the lives of two ladies named Lois and Eunice. Their legacy is recorded in the eternal Word of God -- what an accolade. Somewhat obscure in their community, these ladies are well known to the heavenly hosts, for they nurtured a young boy by the name of Timothy in the things of God. Did they foresee that this young man would become a notable pastor in the early church? The Apostle Paul expressed his love and appreciation for the impact that these ladies had in his beloved fellow worker --
… “I have been reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.”(2 Tim 1:5)
The completion and closing of the Scriptures do not minimize the importance of you and me leaving a spiritual legacy. Our love for God and His working in our lives will be revealed in time and in eternity. The Scriptures speak of the Christian who walks with the Lord as being one who preserves the nation. Such a person brings light in the spiritual realm where darkness resides. Our Lord spoke these words --
… “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how will it be made salty again? It is good for nothing anymore, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men. You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do men light a lamp, and put it under the peck-measure, but on the lampstand; and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.”(Matt 5:13-16 NASB)
The challenge for us is to be that salt, that light which makes an impact now and leaves a legacy of spiritual blessing to future generations.
