The Scriptures speak much of wind for God is in control of the winds. The powerful operations of God’s Spirit, quickening and reviving the soul toward God are a likened to wind. Wind is first mentioned in Genesis 8:1, where God caused a wind to pass over the earth and the Flood waters subsided. It was God who sent a wind that brought quail to feed the Israelites in the Exodus --
… “Now there went forth a wind from the LORD, and it brought quail from the sea, and let them fall beside the camp, about a day's journey on this side and a day's journey on the other side, all around the camp, and about two cubits deep on the surface of the ground.”(Num 11:31 NASB)
Then there was Elijah; my how he enjoyed a good wind storm --
… “There he went into a cave and spent the night. And the word of the LORD came to him: "What are you doing here, Elijah?" He replied, "I have been very zealous for the LORD God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, broken down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too." The LORD said, "Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the LORD, for the LORD is about to pass by." Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.”(1 Kings 19:9-12 NIV)
Elijah was fleeing from Jezebel, discouraged, scared, hiding in a cave. Surely God who was causing rocks to fall and the mountain to quake would speak to him through the wind. But God did not, Instead there was a small still voice. Elijah was looking for outward manifestations of God’s power, and God let him see that. But when God went to speak, there was a voice. How true for us who have trusted in Christ as our Savior. He lives within us; His Spirit speaks to us with that small quiet voice as He brings to our thinking the Truth, His Word. The prophet Jeremiah encourages us these words --
… “Surely my soul remembers and is bowed down within me. This I recall to my mind, therefore I have hope. The Lord's lovingkindnesses indeed never cease, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Thy faithfulness. "The LORD is my portion," says my soul, "Therefore I have hope in Him." The LORD is good to those who wait for Him, to the person who seeks Him.”(Lamentations 3:20-25)
